French Alphabet and Pronunciation

French language, stemming from Latin, evolved. Medieval texts reflect the way people pronounced words: proof is that the writing differs according to the place — because French as a "uniform" language is very recent.

But at different moments of history written French had to be fixed: centralization needs harmonization for effective communication with the development of administration. Compromises came up from the multiplicity of dialects. Also, during the Renaissance, scholars wanted written French to reflect its latin origin: why writing pied ("foot") instead of pié*, which sounds exactly alike? Because the d of pied is a witness of pedem, in Latin. These were called "lettres étymologiques".

Unlike English, some French words are also spelled with accent marks.  French accent marks tell us how to pronounce certain letters in words, and also help us differentiate the meanings of homonyms (words that sound the same but are spelled differently).  It’s important to use accent marks properly in order to spell French words correctly!

Spoken French is totally different from written French - way more so than even written English.
Thus the many homophones and vast array of dropped or elided endings or written grammatical endings that are not there in speech.

Therefore you can see in these two French examples that the letter “r” is not pronounced in any way similar to the letter “r” in Spanish nor the letter “r” in English. You have to pay very close attention to the placement of accents in French that will guide you in advance on how to pronounce words correctly and this is the reason why written and spoken French are so different. This alone is what will stand you apart when speaking French like a native. The correct and impactful roll of the letter “r” and usage of the throat is king!
